The use of sigma model field theories (harmonic maps) to describe shells of matter is discussed in the context of exact axially symmetric solutions of the Einstein equations. Particular solutions that represent finite spherical shells and cones are presented. The special case of a spherical shell in the presence of a Schwarzschild black hole is studied in some detail.
