This is a resubmission of proposal 07B-0398 which was allocated 2 nights in October 2007, but suffered from very poor weather. We request Keck ESI spectroscopy of two quasars discovered by our ongoing high redshift quasar survey. With redshifts of z=6.42 and z=6.20 these are some of the highest redshift quasars known. This spectroscopy will measure the IGM transmission along these lines-of-sight to infer the neutral fraction of hydrogen to be compared with the results of simulations. Most simulations predict a sharp increase in the optical depth and its variance at the tail-end of the reionization epoch. The spectra will cover both the Ly(alpha) and Ly(beta) transitions. We will carry out a range of statistical analyses on the spectra including the dark gap size distribution, the width and height of transmission spikes and the extent of the highly-ionized near-zones that the quasars have ionized.
