Scientific paper

Some recent results in cosmic-ray physics are summarized, and how they
raise new questions of interest for both physics and astrophysics is
described. An important technical advance, the recently demonstrated
capability of long-duration balloon flights of heavy payloads, will
offer a great advantage for achieving some of these goals.
