In connection with suggestions that encounters of the solar system with extra-solar phenomena in earlier epochs led to climatic and biological catastrophes, an investigation is conducted regarding the possibility that rare and very big solar flares, and their attendant cosmic-ray fluxes, will produce even more dramatic effects. The results of the investigation indicate that any consideration of possible catastrophes experienced by the earth in its history must take into account, in addition to close supernovae, also solar flares and explosions at the galactic center.
