The differential intensity of protons and deuterons in the atmosphere at Fort Churchill, Canada were measured during the summer of 1971 with a balloon-borne dE/dx-E telescope. The telescope was capable of resolving isotopes of hydrogen in the energy interval from 35 to about 160 MeV for protons and from 48 to 215 MeV for deuterons. By using a NaI-detector in conjunction with the E-detector, it was possible to extend the proton spectrum up to 1 GeV. The primary proton spectrum at the top of the atmosphere was derived from the total intensity at 3.1 gm/cm2 and is in agreement with satellite measurements. This agreement suggests that the method used to evaluate the secondary contribution at 3.1 gm/cm2 and other depths is adequate to explain the overall variations of the secondary proton intensity in the atmosphere.
