Recent results (Richardson and Wolfendale, 1988) from gamma-ray astronomy suggest that the conversion factor from CO line intensity to column density of molecular hydrogen apparently falls with increasing gamma-ray energy. This result implies that the cosmic ray intensity at low energies inside the local giant molecular clouds (GMC) in question is higher than that outside. Models are considered whereby the cosmic rays within GMC might be accelerated and it is concluded that the convection model of Morfill (1982) has attractive features. The analysis confirms the need to use a 'low' value for the conversion factor when deriving GMC masses.
