Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) quasar spectra offer the opportunity to perform surveys for intervening absorption-line systems with a variety of properties. In particular, we have been focusing on the creation of an extremely large catalog of MgII absorption systems. Here we review this work and outline several potential applications. A subset of the strong MgII systems include damped Lyman-Alpha systems, which trace neutral gas regions in the Universe. We will discuss results from using the catalog to form composite spectra that can in turn be used to measure cosmic neutral-gas-phase metal abundances at moderate redshift. This work is supported by an NSF grant.
