Cosmic gamma-ray bursts of a duration of about 10 seconds have been detected. Theories concerning the possible causes of the observed bursts are discussed, giving attention to material falling onto a neutron star, very powerful stellar flares, collisions between antimatter and stars, the emission of relativistic dust grains from pulsars, and the explosion of mini-black holes. It is pointed out that the results of recent theoretical calculations do not favor the possibility that supernovae might be sources of the brief cosmic gamma-ray bursts.
