We study the cosmic evolution of the spin distribution of massive black holes through both binary mergers and gas accretion via relativistic magnetohydrodynamical accretion disks in the hierarchical structure model of galaxy formation. Following Volonterii et al. (2005)'s work, we use cosmological Monte Carlo realizations of the merger hierarchy from early times to present in a ΛCDM cosmology to follow the merger history of dark matter halos and the massive black holes they host. Our main improvement is that we develop a new self-adaptive merging tree code which makes the Monte Carlo realization more efficient and the data storage more economical.
