The association between Type Ic supernovae and long-soft Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs) is well established, opening a unique window into the early universe, GRB afterglows provide very bright, albeit quickly fading, light sources with which we can study the intervening medium via absorption line spectroscopy. These observations trace the cosmic star formation history, perhaps to Tthe elusive Pop III stars, and also provide tools to establish metallicities for objects beyond reionization at z 7. We discuss advantages and shortcoming of GRBs as tracers of cosmic chemical evolution.
