The gravitational lensing effect is the deflection of a ray bundle due to the gravitation field produced by the mass of the Universe. This effect is now considered as one of the most powerful and promising tools for observational cosmology. Magnification and distortion of images of distant galaxies produced by gravitational lenses can map the (dark) matter distribution of galaxies and large scale structures of the Universe. With new wide-field panoramic CCD cameras, it is now possible to measure the density parameter of the Universe (Ω) and the projected power spectrum of the mass density fluctuation, regardless of the distribution of light. In this paper the authors review the history and the most recent developments in this field.
