A TENET of cosmochemistry is the identification of bulk analyses of Type I carbonaceous meteorites with abundances, of the condensable elements, in the primordial solar system1,2. Such analyses are basic to most tabulations of cosmic abundances3-5. A Type I meteorite is complex, mineralogically and petrologically6-9, however, and there are grounds for questioning the extent to which it has remained a closed system since separation from the solar gas6,10. I have suggested that the apparently primitive chemistry of such a meteorite may be the result of a major component dominating the analysis and that this component might be unaltered solar system condensate11.
