The Joshua trilateration network was surveyed two months before and one month after the Landers earthquake. In each survey distances were measured with Geodolite, a precise electro-optical distance-measuring instrument. The coseismic displacement field within the network was calculated from changes observed in the network and displacements measured at four GPS stations. The observed changes were reproduced reasonably well by dislocation modeling in which the Landers rupture was represented by 8 vertical fault segments. Residuals for the best-fit slip distribution are greater than expected from measurement error and are attributed to inelastic deformation within the fault blocks assumed to be elastic in the model. The dislocation model provides a reasonable approximation to the measured line length changes and the inferred displacement pattern.
