A data set of one-month averages for the energy per charge range 0.9-15.9 keV/e from 48 mos of data gathered by the Ion Composition Experiments on board the ESA/GEOS 1 and 2 satellites in GEO are examined. The readings were taken concurrent with the rising and maximum of the solar cycle from May 1977-Nov. 1981, inclusive. Ion species identified included H(+), He(++), He(+), O(++), and O(+), with a limiting density of 0.001 ions/cu cm. The species were highly correlated with each other and with the Kp index and the solar EUV level. A rise of magnetospheric densities of He(+), O(++), and O(+) ions with the increased solar EUV fluxes was discerned. O(+) density increased with geomagnetic activity, while the He(++)/H(+) ratio remained constant at 0.01. The results are discussed in terms of the composition and dynamics of the solar wind and the high latitude topside ionosphere.
