Using the catalogs compiled by Imoto and Hasegawa (1958) and Hasegawa (1980), the dates of appearance of ancient comets and meteor showers are compared, and statistically analyzed. A significant excess of approximate coincidences, indicative of several cases of genetic association between the two kinds of objects, is found. The excess is consistent with the assumption that four (i.e., 7 percent) of the previously unidentified ancient meteor showers were produced by comets observed at approximately the same time, and referred to in historical records.
