Despite the fact that we live in a spiral galaxy, our understanding of how spirals formed remains quite limited. One way of learning how the various components of spirals (bulges, halos, disks) assembled is by studying their ancient globular cluster (GC) systems, which provide unique glimpses into the early formation history of their parent galaxies. In this contribution we present recent results obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope concerning the GC systems of five nearby spiral galaxies, and discuss the implications for galaxy and cluster formation.
