Published observations of UV excess in 16 Mira-type stars and data on the intensity of spectral lines of Tc (at 4238, 4262, and 4297 A) are compared in a table and represented graphically. A correlation with correlation coefficient 0.79 and regression coefficient -1.2 is found. The implications of this finding for hypotheses advanced to explain the presence of Tc in these stars are considered, and calculations show that these stars may have energy release of more than about 10 to the 18th erg/g. This is consistent with nuclear processes taking place at the stellar surface rather than in the interior.
