It is suggested that Na is synthesized in the reaction Ne-22(p,gamma)Na-23 at the same place in the interior of the red giants (O layer) where N is produced in the ON cycle. N and Na thus produced are then transported to the base of the convective envelope by an additional mixing process. The time scale of this process is estimated, and its relationship with the Sweigart-Mengel circulation is considered.
