We interpret the recently published monitoring observations of the Seyfert I galaxy NGC 5548 in terms of an accretion disk irradiated by an X-ray source. The variable part of the UV optical continuum results from direct reprocessing of the X-ray energy in the central region. The Balmer lines are emitted by the outer regions of the disk which are photoionized by X-ray photons scattered by a surrounding medium, schematized as a secondary pointlike source. We assume that the light curve of the X-ray continuum is identical to that observed in the UV range. We then consistently derive UV and optical continuum light curves and find that they are both almost in phase with the X-ray one within a time lag of about one day. The derived fluxes and their amplitude variations at different wavelengths agree very satisfactorily with the observations. Our model can also satisfactorily account for the H-beta flux (integrated profile, accounting for about 70 percent of the broad emission) light curve. We deduce variable emission-line delays in response to different continuum variability time scales, thus reconciling the different estimates by the various monitoring campaigns.
