From published photoelectric photometry, absolute magnitudes are estimated for the active nucleus in a number of Seyfert galaxies. The nuclear luminosity, both optical and bolometric, is decidedly correlated with the integrated luminosity of the parent galaxy. This effect evidently is not attributable simply to obsevational selection but reflects a true interdependence between the nuclear activity and the properties of the system as a whole. A sharp dividing line probably exists between normal and Seyfert galaxies with regard to the nonstellar optical luminosity of their nucleus.
