A dynamical model of the vertical stratification in a thin Keplerian α-disk is considered. We study the time development of the corona in a vertical accretion disk model. Viscous dissipation in the optically thin upper layers of the disk give rise to a thermal instability caused by insufficient cooling at very low densities. Our results indicate a rise time of the thermal instability of the order of 10Ω-1. This is much shorter than the time delay between the rise in the optical and UV wavelengths in an outburst. The instability and thermal runaway is avoided by including thermal turbulent fluxes at realistic Prandtl numbers of order unity.
