On 23 July 2001, the prototype Solar X-ray Imager (SXI) instrument was lofted into orbit aboard the NOAA GOES-12 spacecraft. Although many optical elements of the system are based upon previous spacecraft designs (eg., the nickel-coated mirror employs long-established Wolter-I grazing incidence technology), the detector is of a type not previously used for direct solar imaging. To gain the enhanced broadband (6-60 Angstrom) sensitivity most revealing of coronal structures pertinent to space weather applications, it utilizes a multi-channel plate image intensifier feeding a visible light CCD via a phosphor layer. The optical response of the combined system (prefilter, mirror, analysis filters, detector) thus differs in important ways from more familiar instruments, such as Yohkoh-SXT, EIT, and TRACE. Using an extensive set of imagery taken during SXI post-launch tests, we will highlight the SXI imaging performance (spectral response, photon statistics, spatial and temporal resolution, etc.), as compared with existing solar instruments.
