The relation between coronal holes and geomagnetic storms is analyzed. The results support the idea that the M region is essentially a type of coronal hole with a relatively large equatorial area. It is found that the east-west extents of two typical coronal holes studied are 25 to 50 deg near the solar equator and that the time lag between geomagnetic-storm onset and coronal-hole central meridian passage (CMP) is inversely correlated with the equatorial area of the coronal hole. Records of fan-beam interferometric observations of the sun at 146 MHz during the presence of coronal holes are examined which show a regular variation, suggesting that the emission flux is diminished in coronal holes and that these holes corotate with the sun. The possibility is considered of using 146-MHz radio data and sunspot records to determine the CMP of coronal holes.
