The four YY Orionis stars YY Ori, DR Tau, DS Tau, and RW Aur were monitored spectroscopically and photometrically during a four-day coordinated observing run combining observations made at different geographic longitudes. The redward-displaced absorption components (characteristic of this sub-type of T Tauri stars) were found to vary on time scale down to two hours. These short time scales and a dependence of the time behavior on the Balmer quantum number suggest variations in the envelope excitation conditions to be the direct cause of the observed line profile variability. The excitation variations may result from variable accretion shock heating or (in the absence of significant mass flow rate variations) from short term changes of the photospheric radiation field. The spectrum of YY Orionis showed a systematic radial velocity change over the observing run.
