We propose to obtain complementary optical spectra of the unusual binary X-ray system, SS433, in conjunction with a Hubble Space Telescope study of the system's far-ultraviolet spectrum. The HST program will provide a first ever investigation of the FUV spectrum of this highly reddened system, and the HST spectra should reveal the FUV counterparts of the relativistic jet signatures observed in optical emission lines (as well as lines formed in the winds of both the disk and donor stars). The HST spectra will be made in 5 monthly intervals to span one precessional cycle (i.e., over the full range of jet radial velocity) and we will use a tomography algorithm to extract the moving spectral components. The algorithm requires secure estimates of the radial velocities of the jet features, and since the precessional clock is erratic we must obtain contemporaneous radial velocity estimates from the ground. We propose to obtain these from H(alpha) spectroscopy with the KPNO Coude Feed telescope. The Coude Feed spectra will also provide valuable data on the orbital motion and masses of the system.
