The initial results of the Helios 1 experiment, interpreted by Rosenbauer et al. (1977) to indicate the possible existence of two types of solar wind, are reexamined, and it is suggested that the data show that the slow protons in the solar wind exhibit cooling compatible with adiabatic expansion rather than with the nearly isothermal expansion found in a preliminary analysis. The new analysis involves the reduction of the strong dependence of temperature on velocity by the definition of a reduced temperature, and the choice of samples which are as uniform as possible in velocity and in (distance) normalized density. The mean values and their standard deviations for data in several distance intervals are computed, and it is found that the cooling is given roughly by the adiabatic formula.
