A quantitative description of the external source of the magnetospheric electric field (due to the motion of the solar wind) is given for reconnection associated with the Bx and By components of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) when Bz is directed toward the north. It is shown that a two-vortex convection structure appears when the radial component of the solar-wind magnetic field is not equal to zero; a single-vortex structure occurs in the case of Bx = 0. The observed reversal of convection at Bz greater than 0 is explained. It is predicted that field-aligned currents in the cusp region will increase in the case of a northward IMF and a two-vortex convection structure in zone I.
