The Intercosmos-Bulgaria-1300 satellite measured electric and magnetic fields and auroral emissions on January 10-11, 1983. A complicated pattern of convection and field-aligned currents was observed in the nightside of the winter polar cap during strongly northward IMF. This pattern suggests that six large scale field-aligned current sheets and three convective large scale vortices exist in the polar cap. The structures of a smaller scale electric field were observed at the boundaries of sun-aligned polar arcs. These structures correspond to S-shaped electric potential distributions. Significant enhancement of ionized oxygen emission (7320 A) up to several thousand Rayleighs was observed in the polar cap arc. It is found that the interaction between viscous and B(y)-dependent convection cells leads to the vanishing of viscous convection in the morning sector when IMF B(y) is less than 0 and in the evening side if B(y) is greater than 0.
