The problem of the motion of a cylindrical electrostatic probe in a low-density plasma is examined. It is assumed that the cylinder radius is small compared to the Debye radius of the unperturbed plasma. The analysis is based on the Poisson equation and the kinetic equations for electrons and ions. The characteristic curve of the probe is discussed, and the constraints on the probe potential, for which the results obtained hold, are identified. Some estimates are obtained for the cylindrical probe carried by the Intercosmos 10 satellite.
