The properties of the grains in the CS envelope of AB Aur were investigated, using UV extinction and IR excess data. The UV extinction spectrum was compared with Mie theory predictions for spherical grains of different compositions and sizes. Silicate grains are shown to be capable of producing the anomalous extinction curve. A model of IR emission by a spherical cloud of silicate grains shows that these grains cannot be responsible for the IR excess in the 2 to 6 microns range. This excess could be due to grains other than silicates, e.g., iron, or to free-free emission from a hot plasma.
