The contraction of a rotating cloud embedded in a medium of uniform density permeated by a magnetic field is studied with a simplified model. A model of a cloud with subcritical mass and a core in magnetohydrostatic equilibrium is constructed and used to investigate the quasi-static contraction of the core due to magnetic flux loss. The stage at which the core in quasi-equilibrium begins angular momentum-conserving contraction is determined by comparing the time-scale of angular momentum loss with the time-scale of contraction. Also, the angular momentum loss from a dynamically contracting cloud and core is examined. The implications of the results for studying the orbital periods of binary stars are noted.
