Single dishes have been superseded by interferometers for much continuum observing, but they are still used to image very extended objects, especially at higher frequencies where confusion is negligible and a filled aperture is needed to detect low-brightness emission. Even spectral-line and pulsar astronomers normally observe continuum sources to check telescope performance, calibrate their data, and make real-time pointing corrections. This introduction to single-dish continuum describes simple observing techniques and the most important observational errors, supplemented by references to fundamental papers for more detailed explanations and to data sets useful for planning and making observations.
