Scientific paper

General information on the components of intergalactic matter is presented, and the development of studies of its dark component is reviewed. Methods for investigating continuous intergalactic extinction are described. These methods involve the investigation of: (1) the absolute magnitudes and surface brightness of extragalactic objects as a function of distance; (2) their color indices as a function of distance; (3) the dispersion of their absolute magnitudes and surface brightness as a function of distance; (4) their distribution on the celestial sphere; (5) the dispersion of color indices as a function of distance; (6) variation of irregularities of the distribution of extragalactic objects with distance; (7) single dust clouds. Results are presented and the various methods are compared.
