At present there are no deposits of minerals known in Antarctica that can be economically exploited. Minor amount of copper, iron, chromium, and major beds of coal are known, but these cannot presently support mining operations. Projections of known belts and areas of economic mineralization into Antarctica from other segments of Gondawanaland show that a potential exists for discovering deposits of nickel, copper, gold, diamonds, and other high value commodities. Reconstruction of pre-drift positions of Africa and Australia adjacent to Antarctica makes it possible to pinpoint the most promising areas for initial exploration. Although exploration for deposits in Antarctica is not now economically attractive, the continent does offer potential for the future.
