gamma Cas is the prototype of a group of Be stars with peculiar X-ray properties. These X-rays may be produced either by a disk-star magnetic interaction or accretion onto a companion. We attempt to resolve this puzzle by testing for correlations of X-ray continuum and line properties with binary phase, and also by staging optical spectroscopy and interferometry to map the disk's spatial and kinematic properties. Strong changes in column density have been found from one pair of Chandra and XMM spectra obtained at contrasting binary phases (phi =.74 and .16), where high soft X-ray attenuation was present when its secondary was between gamma Cas and us. If this difference repeats with phase, it will imply that the X- rays are emitted from near the Be star.
