A limited array of two, three, or four 8 m-diameter Very Large Telescopes (VLTs) capable of coherent aperture synthesis is proposed. A centrally located station would receive the Coude beams and contain large spectrographs and other bulky instruments for either coherent or conventional observations. Attention is given to the design characteristics and anticipated performance of spherical mounts for the telescopes, together with their unconventional drive systems. For mirrors in the 8 m class, the VLT sphere size may vary from 10 to about 17 m depending on focal length.
