This note is a gentle introduction to higher dimensional local fields, with
the motivating problem being the standard geometric "localisation-completion"
process by which they can be constructed. A direct proof of the behaviour of
this construction, which is the simplest part of the theory of higher
dimensional adeles, will hopefully be useful to both specialists and newcomers.
