The properties of galaxies at z > 4 provide information on the early assembly of galaxies and star formation in the universe at the age less than a few billion years. We use deep spectroscopy from Keck Deimos and population synthesis modeling with Starburst99 to identify key measurements required to constrain the stellar population age and initial mass function and dust extinction. Specifically, the existence of the CIV absorption line indicates massive star formation within the previous 10 million years, and therefore an intrinsic slope of the unextincted UV continuum. Thus sources with the CIV absorption are optimum for measuring the spectral slope of the dust continuum at high z since the unextincted UV slope is unchanged as long as massive stars are being formed. The existence of the 4000 A break requires that the stellar population contain stars older than 100 Myr AND that the mass function extend down to a few solar masses. Thus, the detection of this feature implies that the high z starforming galaxies must have an IMF extending to low mass. For a continuous star formation scenario which is most likely applicable on galaxy scales, the ratio of restframe optical to UV continua can be used to constrain the duration of star formation.
