Scientific paper

The upper limit γ-ray flux in the direction of the newly discovered isolated neutron star 1ES 1853-379 was found to be about 5×10-8ph cm-2s-1 from the upper limit map of the second EGRET source catalogue. This gives an upper limit luminosity of 7.6×1023 (D/100 pc)2 J/s on assuming a 1/4π beaming fraction and a 1 GeV average photon energy. The derived efficiency of γ-ray production is about two orders of magnitude lower than that predicted by the efficiency-age relation from known γ-ray pulsars in either the polar cap or the outer gap model. From this the authors derive constraints on the spin parameters of this object.
