Mars Climate Sounder (MCS) is a nine channel infrared radiometer with limb staring arrays optimized for atmospheric sounding of temperature, dust, and water ice (McCleese et al., 2007). We use the MCS limb radiance profiles and retrieved geophysical quantities to determine the global distribution of water ice particle sizes, including at night and in the winter polar regions. For this study MCS IR channels centered at 12 microns (A4) and 42 microns (B2) are used due to their sensitivity to water ice particle size variations. Extinction ratios indicate they are sensitive to particles larger than ~1.4 microns. We use the MCS forward model, including a single scattering parameterization (Kleinböhl et al. 2009, 2011), to calculate particle size dependent radiance profiles for the A4 and B2 channels from retrieved water ice opacities in channel A4. We compare the calculated radiances ratio (A4/B2) with the measured radiances ratio to estimate the particle size. Preliminary results at Ls = 40° and 116° show predominantly large particles (> 5 microns) at night between 30° S and 90° N latitude, with smaller particles (2-4 microns) in the south polar hood region. In the daytime, small particles (< 1.5 micron) are seen in the northern hemisphere and tropics while large particles (> 5 microns) are seen in the south, but they decrease in size from 60° to 90° S. Additionally, we find evidence of particle size variability with altitude. We will present particle size retrievals in the nighttime and daytime for several days throughout the Martian year.
