Empirical data on triton beta decay have been analyzed with regard to their implications for neutron beta decay, and a new value for the comparative half-life for triton decay is calculated. Subject to an important correction to the Gamow-Teller matrix element, a result is derived for the ratio of the axial vector and polar vector form factors in neutron beta decay. It is suggested that the triton data exclude values of the neutron lifetime outside the range 911 + or - 10 s, and a weighted mean value for that lifetime of 914 + or - 6 s is deduced.
