Twelve hours of continuous EXOSAT observations (1985 September 9-10) of 4U 1746-37, located in the globular cluster NGC 6441, were analyzed. Two almost identical X-ray bursts, separated by 8h27m, were detected. The evolution of the bursts indicates that they are type 1 (thermonuclear) bursts, which during their peaks show radius expansion of the neutron star photosphere. Using the optical distance range (6.8 to 11.1 kpc), and allowing for anisotropy in the burst emission, constraints on the mass-radius relation for the neutron star in 4U 1746-37 were derived. If the neutron star has a canonical mass of 1.4 solar mass, the observed burst fluxes have to be reduced as a result of anisotropy of the burst emission by a factor at least 1.3 to 2.2 (depending on the composition of the neutron star surface). Results are consistent with the very soft and intermediately stiff equations of state, and argue against the very stiff equations of state for neutron star matter proposed by Pandharipande and Smith (1975).
