The theoretical instability strip in the P1/P0 vs. log P0 plane (P0 is the fundamental period, P1 the first overtone) is plotted for both homogeneous and inhomogeneous models. Neither fits the observed strip: inhomogeneous models have the wrong slope; homogeneous models have the correct slope, but the P1/P0 values are too large. It may not be possible to reproduce the observed data with any sort of reasonable equilibrium model by using a linear eigenvalue analysis.
