A recently identified SNC (Shergotty-Nakhla-Chassigny) meteorite is the basaltic shergottite QUE 94201, which has geochemical and isotopic affinities with other SNC meteorites which are consistent with a Martian origin. The researchers have completed Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd isotopic analyses of minerals, whole rocks, and leachates from QUE 94201. The results are presented in this paper. Also presented are time-integrated crystallization/partial melting models that demonstrate that QUE 94201 can be derived from cumulates that cystallized from a magma ocean that have subsequently undergone repeated small-volume partial melting events. Highly fractionated late stage residual liquids trapped in the cumulate pile (referred to here as trapped residual liquids) could represent an evolved component either in the mantle, or if the cumulates have been previously melted, in the Martian crust.
