The gamma ray line emission observed with COMPTEL from Orion is attributed to the interaction within the molecular cloud of fast nuclei resulting from diffusive shock acceleration of a seed source. We have carried out detailed calculations of pion production by such low energy cosmic rays enriched in heavy elements. In the light of the EGRET observations of the molecular complex, we show that the characteristic energy of the accelerated particles spectrum can be quite large, but should not exceed 100 MeV/nucleon in order to not overproduce the high energy gamma ray emission.
