We report observations of K I, Ca I, CH, and C2 towards kappa Vel, obtained in an attempt to characterize the physical and chemical conditions within the variable insterstellar structure along the line of sight. We find the K I column density has more than doubled in 12 years, implying structure on the scale of 30 AU, and that of Ca I has strengthened by 25% over a timescale of 4 years. The CH column density shows no evidence of having increased since 2002, in line with the model of time-dependent chemistry of Bell et al. (2005). The CH line profile also allows us to set constraints on the cloud conditions in which the molecule is formed. At present, we report only an upper limit to the column density of C2.
