We propose to use Subaru-MOIRCS to carry out multi-object spectroscopy of rest-frame optical emission lines in galaxies at z 2, in order to constrain the metallicities, gas fractions, and outflow properties of galaxies at the peak era of star formation in the universe. We will observe one mask containing 40 galaxies which already have both rest-frame UV spectra and measurements of stellar masses and ages from optical through mid-IR imaging; young, low mass galaxies will be given highest priority on this mask. We will observe the mask in the J, H and K bands, to obtain the full set of optical emission lines needed to determine metallicities. This will enable the determination of metallicities of individual galaxies at z 2, in contrast to most earlier work which has used composite spectra for all but the most metal-rich galaxies. We will also determine dynamical masses from line widths, and compare them with stellar masses. This will provide a test of our previous work, which suggested that galaxies with low stellar masses are very gas rich. We will also use the metallicity and gas fraction measurements to constrain rates of galactic inflow and outflow.
