Observational determinations of the resolved star formation law in galaxies require taking into account a number of factors.
Extinction and contributions from non star-forming populations affect many measures of star formation, the excitation of the CO molecule affects the measure of molecular gas, and the treatment of diffuse backgrounds and the statistical methodologies employed all have an impact on the precise relation between gas and star formation.
We discuss the role of these different factors on the measure of the resolved star formation law at sub-kpc scales in NGC 4254 (M99, a Sc spiral in the outskirts of the Virgo cluster), using high-resolution multi-wavelength data.
