The procedure of obtaining the photographic positions of Mars, which was used in the processing of the plates of the astrographic telescope in Pulkovo, is described. Eight formulae for calculating the corrections for the change of the phase of Mars are presented. On the basis of the analysis of the results of the observations of Mars performed in Pulkovo in 1973 - 1993, it is demonstrated that a choice of the formula for taking account of the phase is ambiguous and the corrections calculated by each of these formulae do not correspond simultaneously to differences (O-C) in right ascension and declination. The inference about the necessity of the consideration of the surface features of the planet for increasing the accuracy of positional observations was made. The orthotropic law formula most effectively satisfies the observations of Mars for the last three oppositions.
