The present study considers possible causes of the disturbance of adiabatic invariant conservation, e.g., particle collisions which equalize longitudinal and transverse momentum components. In a strong magnetic field, the equalizing process slows down greatly. It is shown that the adiabatic invariant is conserved along the entire polar column of a neutron star. For this reason the idea of matter free falling on the surface of a pulsar should be reconsidered.
